I’m befuddled by Dawn Montgomery’s Solar Skies. Is this a sequel of some sort? If it weren’t for the synopsis on the publisher website, I’d still be in the dark about some major plot points in this story.

When the story opens, Dr Auron Sterling becomes a willing hostage of Captain Kayanna Lord because he knows that she is wounded and, as a doctor, it is after all his responsibility to rescue a human being, especially when humans are dwindling in numbers. Kayanna injects him with some… thing… that may very well kill him if he didn’t succeed in saving her. Then there is something about forcing a bond between them, the two main characters are having sex before I know it, and some kind of subplot about destroying a Project Sol comes up for the grand finale.

The problem with this short story is that because of the scarcity of back story and details about things like Project Sol, I am left scratching my head by the last page and wondering what the heck I had just read. For once, a few dozen pages of information dumping would have done wonders in improving this short story.
