I’m not even going to ask what that thing on the cover of Kayelle Allen’s Jawk is. The hero, I’d presume, since Jawk in the story is a waiter with fangs and all. He’s a feline Kin who is working in an upscale restaurant called Batchelors 4 in Tarth City. This is a popular spot among rich gay folks, but Jawk is only interested in one such fellow – Luc Saint-Cyr, the crime boss of the city. You see, Jawk is actually an undercover agent.

Actually Jawk is more than that, as he’s an Immortal, but because I am not familiar with Ms Allen’s setting, I’m not even going to try to explain that one. She has a nice website with all the details about her setting and the Immortals, however, so there is one place people can go if they want to catch up on details. Luc and his boyfriend Wulf last appeared in Wulf and they’re here doing the threesome thing with Jawk.

Now, my problem with Jawk is that I have only read one previous book in the series, Wulf. This one drags me right into what seems like the very middle of a story so now I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this book. This is not a standalone book at all, I believe, because all the plot threads are already underway in this book so heaven helps anyone like me who have not followed the series from day one. I can barely remember much about Wulf, which doesn’t help at all, naturally. It’s like walking into the cinema into the middle of a film after missing the first hour of the movie.

All I can say is: if you want to read this book, start from the very beginning. The very first book, that is.
