Main cast: Peter White (Paul), Judy Geeson (Anna Soretska), SA Griffin (Satan’s Minion), and Philip Abbott (Oliver)
Director: Scott Vickrey
In Refugee, Paul, an agent of over 20 years of service, expects to spend his last few years before his retirement pushing pencil when his superior Oliver sends him out for one final field assignment: to escort Anna, a Russian scientist defecting from her motherland, to a safe house.
This mission cannot fail, because the Cold War is finally coming to an end, and any failure would jeopardize the talks. Still, how hard can this be?
Well, how about a minion of Satan showing up at the safe house to demand Anna’s soul? Yes, she had apparently signed a contract with Satan as part of her job for the motherland, and now it’s time the big guy down below collects what is owed to him.
Don’t expect any spy stuff, as this show will never be able to afford the budget to carry off the whole thing without humiliating everyone involved, heh.
Instead, this is a more cozy kind of episode revolving around a jaded and tired agent that just wants out, but walking away may not be as simple as just waiting out his last few years of service. Even more so when Satan is in the picture!
Judy Geeson’s performance is pretty painful to watch, sometimes excruciatingly so with her overacting and that grating accent, but Peter White puts on a dignified performance as a tragic agent whose greatest downfall is his reluctant sense of nobility. Philip Abbott and SA Griffin also put in a good job to play appropriately convivial yet ruthless sorts that serve as a foil for Paul.
However, this episode is a predictable one, right down to the twist. Were not for the cast minus Judy Geeson, the whole thing would be a snooze. They are truly the MVPs here, making this one far more memorable than it otherwise would be.
