Main cast: John Cena (Christopher Smith/Peacemaker), Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Freddie Stroma (Adrian Chase/Vigilante), Chukwudi Iwuji (Clemson Murn), Jennifer Holland (Agent Emilia Harcourt), Steve Agee (John Economos), Annie Chang (Detective Sophie Song), Lochlyn Munro (Detective Larry Fitzgibbon), Elizabeth Faith Ludlow (Keeya Adebayo), Alison Araya (Amber Calcaterra), Lenny Jacobson (Evan Calcaterra), and Robert Patrick (Auggie Smith)
Director: James Gunn
James Gunn has Detective Sophie Song refer to superhero stuff as “cape shit”, which makes Best Friends, For Never somewhat awesome already by default.
Detective Sing and Detective Larry Fitzgibbon finally show up in this show, as they are called to the scene after the explosive ending of the previous episode. They aren’t keen on tackling another case of cape shit, as they have their hands full with some superhero called Vigilante running around the place already.
This episode is what they call a transitional episode: it exists solely to link the previous episode to the next one. Here, Peacemaker tries to get away from the scene of the crime, so to speak, and reunite with the rest of the goon squad, while the cops try to figure out what has happened.
This is also where I start to feel tad sour about the show, because this episode is all about people being incompetent idiots, and it’s a race to the bottom to see which faction is the dumber one. The wit here isn’t funny as much it is childish and even hackneyed, as if James Gunn had just let his inner 10-year old out to run amok here.
Aside from that. nothing interesting happens until the last scene, which, of course, is just a hook to get me to keep watching.
Sure, this episode is okay, I suppose, if one had a thing for John Cena showing skin while playing the class clown, or people behaving like cussing goofballs in general. After the previous episode, though, this one is a significant letdown.
I guess I will have to tamper my expectations for the rest of the season!
