Unbreakable (2000)

Main cast: Bruce Willis (David Dunn), Samuel L Jackson (Elijah Price), Robin Wright Penn (Audrey Dunn), Spencer Treat Clark (Joseph Dunn), Charlayne Woodard (Mrs Price), Eamonn Walker (Dr Mathison), and Chance Kelly (The Orange Man)
Director: M Night Shyamalan

The intriguing premise of Unbreakable has David, a man who couldn’t get hurt or sick, teaming up with Elijah, a man who is fragile and always getting hurt, to search for his destiny. That’s it, really, and I can’t give anything more away or the story will be totally ruined for anyone reading this.

This movie has several powerful moments, and in a way it is less derivative than The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan’s previous runaway hit. I find myself wondering what the twist will be – Christian overtones, perhaps? Unfortunately, the “twist” is one really lousy, hackneyed premise, making me wonder if the previous hour and half has been for nothing.

While Unbreakable makes a compelling watch, there is always a distance between me and the characters onscreen. After all, Bruce Willis is rehashing his hang-dog sad-woe-me look that is wearing thin, while Samuel L Jackson plays his role like a much taller Yoda. In a way, these characters are familiar stereotypes, as are the roles of David’s wife and kid. Without any emotional anchors, this one is a well-polished, sometimes powerful, but more often than not slow and ineffective movie.
