Eli Roth produced Urban Legend, which seems to be an excuse for all his friends to create episodes and make some money from Discovery+.

Fair enough, but is there something about Discovery+ that I’m not aware of? Why do they bleep out all the curse words, but keep all the violence in? I will never understand the wiring of the brains of some people, I tell you.

Anyway, this episode ends with Eli Roth interviewing the director and screenwriter Justin Harding, and as stilted and fake as the whole interview seems to be, it’s still far more interesting than the episode itself.

The Red Room is about Majesty, a streamer that runs a fake Saw-like show which sees the audience bidding in bitcoins on the killer that they want to see torture and murder a bound captive on screen.

She’s doing this to collect some money for a personal cause, but the fact that she’s raking in the dough leads to some unsavory people trying to get their hands on her bitcoin trove.

They will learn soon enough that this woman doesn’t cower easily. Let’s just say that her audience members are going to get the best show ever soon enough…

Sure, it’s always nice to see people killed on the small screen in lovely painful ways, but this episode is such a watered down take on any random torture porn movie that saturated the horror scene about 10 to 20 years ago that it actually feels dated and unoriginal as a result. There is a strong whiff of eau de “rejected script that couldn’t get made until now”-euw here that is hard to overlook.

Of course, the bleeping of all the swear words only drive home how this episode is baby’s first Saw. It’s so laughable that I can’t be subjected to someone saying the F word, but hey, I can see someone graphically stabbing a knife into another person’s ear.

At any rate, this one is an easy episode to skip if one had better things to do. Hopefully, the rest of the show isn’t such a thud of a dud.
