I cringe hard when I hear the jaunty comedy tune playing over the opening scene of The Demons, because this means that the episode is meant to be some wacky comedy.
If past episodes tailored to be of this nature were anything to go by, this show equates wacky to juvenile, puerile, and cringe pile. Sadly, this episode isn’t bucking that trend anytime soon.
Perhaps to make up for the more grown-up nature of the last few episodes, this one sees a bumbling, bespectacled alien called Arturus that casts a spell to summon a demon that will grant him his greatest desire.
Unfortunately, he can’t figure out what some of the stated ingredients on his instruction sheet is, so he ends up just throwing in whatever he thinks will work.
Hence, he has only himself to blame when he ends up summoning the very human and rather useless insurance agent Arthur Gammet instead.
The first quarter of this episode sees Richard Moll in his alien costume jumping around, hopping up and down, and doing whatever the show considers “physical comedy”, sigh.
All this just to summon a demon that will give him what he wants: 10,000 pounds of dress. Wait, did he just say “dress”?
Who cares. This episode is full of people screaming, screeching, and shouting while acting like they are auditioning for a place in clown school.
The whole thing is unfunny and obnoxious, with everyone especially Richard Moll overacting in such a degree that I feel like I’m being patronized upon. The story seems to be concocted only for these people to make fools out of themselves, and it’s all pretty dire.
Well, talk about a punishing way to kill all goodwill built up over the last few episodes!
