Serving Sara has Matthew Perry, who, if anything, should be able to deliver some laughs. It has also Elizabeth Hurley, who should be able to put on some heat on the screen. But somehow something went wrong somewhere, and this movie is so laugh-free and dull, I think sucking on Brussels sprouts will be a more edifying experience.
Mr Perry plays Joe Tyler, a wisecracking but incompetent process server who must complete this one vital assignment or he’ll be gone from boss Ray Harris’s company. He has to serve divorce papers on Sara Moore, who until then is completely unaware that her husband is a two-timing cheat who is going to dump her and leave her penniless. She decides to hit back and has Joe help her deliver divorce papers to her no-good husband Gordon instead, and wacky antics like Sara’s clothes ripping off, Joe sticking his hand up a cow’s anus, and look, Sara’s clothes falling off again thrill me into stupefying boredom.
It’s not that the two leads have no chemistry. They have some, a little, actually, such as when they do kiss, I actually think it’s rather believable, yeah. But for too long, Serving Sara is a mess, a really boring mess of cow sexual abuse, slapstick stuff, and limpid punchlines. I actually feel sorry for all the people having to act in this crappy movie.
I think I will hate Reginald Hudlin for actually making me feel sorry for an obnoxious, overpaid buffoon like Matthew Perry.
