Contemporary Romance, 2007

Just from the title alone, you can probably guess the storyline of Sami Lee’s Fijian Fling. Sophie Edison has just been recently dumped by her boyfriend so she decides to nurse her blues by escaping the winter in Wisconsin for the sunnier climates of Fiji. Visiting Fiji in February used to be a yearly ritual for her and Brad, but if she’s going to enjoy the vacation this year on her own, so be it. She is soon convinced that she has made a mistake since the Pandanus Lagoon Resort in Viti Levu is overrun by couples and she’s reminded of her dumping by Brad in every turn.

Perhaps it is only appropriate that Sophie is reading Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying when she realizes that there is wonderful opportunity for her to indulge on a fling if she chooses. Dominick “Nick” Dufour, the resort owner, is more than willing to show her the finest Fiji has to offer its tourists. He’s been waiting for three years for her to available, and how lucky for him that this time around she visits his resort as a single woman.

This is a readable story marred by a silly conflict towards the end where the hero uses something the heroine has said to make a grand drama about why a relationship between them can never be. Nick often speaks like a smarmy gigolo too much for my liking and this nonsense from him doesn’t endear him to me at all. At any rate, Fijian Fling is pretty much what it is, nothing more and nothing less. It makes some pleasant diversion without trying too hard to be memorable.
