Like the previous two Denise A Agnew’s romantic suspense books for Liquid Silver Books, Under His Protection a very well-written, polished, and enjoyable read. It’s just that this one is also the… well, it’s not bad, so I shouldn’t use the word “worst” here. However, compared to the previous two books, this one is lacking something.

British librarian Olivia Scott gets a taste of the wild life when she finds herself being held at gunpoint in the very library she works in. SWAT sniper Trey MacGilvary comes to the rescue. As they explore the possibility of a relationship in the aftermath of their dramatic introduction, poor Olivia will realize that the library is far from a bastion of tranquility as everything from disgruntled failed Sheriff-wannabes to bomb threats make an appearance as if poor Olivia has inadvertently found herself in an action movie.

Both characters are fine and the story is also very readable. However, I find this one to be a little too familiar for my liking. Nothing really surprises me, which is disappointing indeed because I’m hoping for something more than that here. Maybe if the author has done little things to keep things from being less predictable, such as for example, having the man that gave Olivia the wrong impression in the opening scene in the library to be the good guy, as opposed to oh-so-predictable case of the cute guy that she drools over being the good guy instead, I may be jolted out of my auto-pilot mode of reading more often.

Under His Protection is at the end of the day a pretty good read. But compared to the author’s previous two books, this one also seems to lack a little bit of that extra something that makes a book memorable instead of being merely okay.
