This gamebook was published back in 1983 as The Race Forever. Dropping the “The” must be an attempt to sound cool to kids, perhaps?

Race Forever has a simple premise. You stand in for your famous speed racer father in the First African Dual Road Race Rally, a series of races “designed to test both the skill of the drivers and the ruggedness of the cars”. You are given the option to take the speed race or the rough road race first. You can take both races in one setting, by the way. Each race is an adventure in its own, and your choice of vehicle has some impact on the proceeding. So, are you ready?

This adventure is simple and uncomplicated, but there are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. While the various story arcs are too short for my liking, Race Forever manages to remain entertaining. Mr Montgomery wisely focuses on conjuring the atmosphere of the race, and the end result is a satisfying dash to the finish line.

All in all, this one is pretty good, especially for a gamebook by this author.
