How Zeke Got Religion is an episode where I already know what will happen.

• The title is a spoiler about how Zeke will survive to the very end.
• If I weren’t paying attention to the title, Zeke is the only black guy among the characters. You know it is. A few decades back, he will die first. These days, being black is final survivor coded.

However, this episode is also a throwback to the first season, when the show embraces unapologetic gore, violence, and carnage when the plot calls for it. 

In this one, a bunch of soldiers are in plane to bomb some Nazis holed up in some church. Only, they delay long enough for those people to summon what appears to be some indestructible demon thing.

That thing proceeds to attack the soldiers in the plane itself, and watching screaming men get ripped to shreds is always a great way to enjoy the day.

So yes, Zeke will survive, although mostly by virtue of doing the least to stick his neck out to get mauled, at least until everyone else is dead.

While this is great and all… really, you have the only black guy being the less daring one as well? Tim Miller and friends may want to spend less time thumping their progressive self-lauding and reexamine what they are doing, or else their inner circle will notice and sharpen their claws.

At any rate, this is a fun episode to watch because it’s so first season, giving me fond memories of when this show is still a cute novelty and not some tired by-the-numbers exercise in substance-free stylistics.

If you have to watch something from this season for whatever reason, make it this one if you’re into gore and men screaming like babies as they are ripped apart into pieces. Just beautiful.
