Demon Bait is part of a series called Lucifer’s Boys, and oh boy, this one does feel like part of an ongoing colorful soap opera. Only, instead of silly blondes with amnesia and hairy hunks in tiny trunks, this one boasts an array of horny gay guys of the paranormal bent. From what I can tell, we’re in Florida, where Tom is one of the ghosts serving the demon Tribal. Lorenzo, lonely and horny, refuses to play along and doom other souls – he has nothing to lose, since he is a doomed soul himself – so Tribal decides to sic a ghost hunter, Tom, on Lorenzo. Only, Tom whips out a different kind of ectoplasm gun and everyone is happy. Well, except for that dildo-brandishing evil demon, I guess.

As I have not read previous stories in this series, I have no idea what to expect from this story at first. Well, now I can safely say that this one is a lukewarm mess. There is hardly any romance here, as the main characters go straight into bed and right into the happy ending abruptly after without any build-up. I know men can be very simple creatures, but come on, simple creatures don’t make compelling main characters in a romance story. Characterization is superficial and the setting is wallpaper, too.

The story is just too lightweight, coming off like a truncated version of a reject Dante’s Cove script. I confess that there are some mildly amusing moments here, but in the end, I’m quite disappointed that the author doesn’t push a little more further and increase the camp factor in this story. After all, something has to make up for the lack of substance in this story, and we may as well go over-the-top crazy. As it is, this story is a rather forgettable read.
