Alaskan Heat is a simple story: our heroine Sophie Branson is a statistician with the FBI agent and when the story opens, she is in Alaska looking for the rogue agent Joe Hawkins. She manages to find him mostly due to an amusing stroke of luck, and now she wants to help him clear his name. Oh, and she and Hawk had a history, although this one is actually a sorry one-night thing that sees him slinking away come morning.
This is a short story, a well-paced one with a fine heroine and pretty engaging storyline. But I have to say that Hawk drives me nuts with his nonsense here. I can only imagine that he was more charming in the past in order to get Sophie to be attracted to him, because I find his self-absorption and pity party here most unappealing. Hawk is the kind of man who treats the woman badly in an attempt to win a martyr of the year award. After all, the world revolves around him and he will never let anyone forget that.
Alaskan Heat is an otherwise readable short story marred by a hero who just doesn’t know when to stop behaving like a big baby.
